Learning Synthesis: Lessons Learned from What Works in SEND Research Studies

This learning synthesis brings together findings from the What Works in SEND programme research reports completed in the first 3 years of the programme. These findings have been synthesised against the framework of 5 broad enablers of improvement in SEND systems, which is used as part the What Works in SEND Effective Practice Evidence Framework.

In addition to key findings organised by the 5 enablers, 4 key policy enablers are included at the end of this document, which were identified in our research. While neither evidence nor comprehensive, these were identified by respondents as policy enablers that may support local areas in their improvement efforts:

• Accountabilities should be collective and aligned across local authorities, educational settings, health and social care;
• Workforce development at a national level;
• National level structures and processes for learning and spread of good practice; and
• Provision of national guidance and support that allows for variation in SEND processes and structures at the local level.
